How I Built a Bookish Business From Scratch as a Mom of Three
I built The Piona from scratch while raising three children.
My days are full of meals, laundry, school activities, baby routines, unfinished cups of coffee, and the constant feeling that someone needs me. Life is beautiful, loud, and busy. But even in the middle of motherhood, I still make time to read.
Sometimes I read only a few pages before falling asleep. Sometimes I carry a book around the house all day, hoping to find ten quiet minutes. And sometimes reading becomes the small pause I desperately need—the moment when I can stop being responsible for everything and simply disappear into another world.
That love of reading became the beginning of The Piona.
Why I Started The Piona
The Piona began with a simple idea: reading should feel like an experience, not another item on a to-do list.
I wanted to create something that would help readers slow down, feel excited about opening a new book, and enjoy a little moment created just for them.
That is how the idea for a Blind Date with a Book gift box was born.
Instead of choosing a book by its cover, readers choose a preferred genre and receive a beautifully wrapped mystery book. The title stays hidden until the package is opened, bringing back the excitement of discovering something completely new.
But I did not want to send only a book.
I wanted each order to feel thoughtful, cozy, and gift-ready—a complete bookish experience that makes the recipient feel special from the moment the box arrives.
Creating a Business Between Mom Life and Bedtime Stories
Starting a small business as a mother of three is not always organized or glamorous.
I work whenever I can find a window of time. That might mean researching books during nap time, preparing packaging after bedtime, answering messages while dinner is cooking, or filming content while the house is briefly quiet.
There were many decisions to make:
- Which books should I include?
- How should each mystery book be wrapped?
- What kind of packaging would protect the products during shipping?
- Which accessories would make the box feel special without becoming cluttered?
- How could I create a meaningful gift for book lovers at an accessible price?
Every detail required testing, changing, and sometimes starting over.
I ordered boxes that were not the right size. I changed product ideas. I experimented with colors, tissue paper, stickers, bookmarks, and different ways to arrange everything inside the box.
Building The Piona has taught me that creating a business from scratch is not about having everything perfectly planned. It is about continuing even when the first version does not work.
Why Reading Still Matters to Me
As mothers, we often put ourselves at the end of the list.
We make sure everyone else is fed, dressed, comfortable, entertained, and cared for. By the time we finally sit down, we may not have much energy left for ourselves.
Reading gives me a small part of myself back.
A book does not require a perfect morning routine, an expensive trip, or hours of free time. Even ten minutes of reading can create space between the responsibilities of the day.
That is why The Piona is more than a store for me.
It is a reminder that small moments of joy still matter.
A wrapped mystery book, a bookmark, a cozy accessory, and the anticipation of opening a package may seem simple. But sometimes simple things are exactly what we need.
What Is a Blind Date with a Book?
A Blind Date with a Book is a surprise reading experience.
The book is wrapped so the title and cover remain hidden. Instead of selecting a specific title, the reader chooses a genre or allows us to surprise them.
The mystery is part of the fun.
It is perfect for readers who:
- want to discover something outside their usual reading list;
- feel overwhelmed by choosing their next book;
- love surprises and thoughtful packaging;
- want to create a relaxing reading ritual;
- are searching for a unique gift for a book lover.
Each The Piona book box is prepared with care so that opening it feels like receiving a present—even when you ordered it for yourself.
And yes, buying yourself a book gift absolutely counts as self-care.
A Thoughtful Gift for Book Lovers
Finding a gift for someone who loves books can be harder than it sounds.
You may not know which titles they already own, what they recently read, or which book is sitting on their wish list. A generic gift card is useful, but it does not always feel personal.
A mystery book gift box creates an experience instead of simply adding another item to a shelf.
It can be a thoughtful choice for:
- birthdays;
- Mother’s Day;
- holidays;
- teacher appreciation gifts;
- care packages;
- long-distance friendships;
- a cozy night at home;
- a well-deserved personal treat.
The surprise element makes the gift memorable, while the bookish accessories help turn reading into a complete ritual.
Every Order Is Packed by a Real Person
The Piona is not a large warehouse or a faceless corporation.
When you order from my shop, a real person sees your order. I select and wrap the book, arrange the items, prepare the packaging, and make sure the box feels special before it leaves my hands.
I know there is a person waiting on the other side.
Maybe the box is a birthday gift. Maybe it is being sent to a friend who needs encouragement. Maybe it is for a busy mother who wants one quiet evening to herself. Or maybe it is a reward for someone who simply made it through a difficult week.
That is why I care about the details.
Customers can also add a TikTok packing video to eligible orders and watch their own book box being prepared. Personal information and shipping details are never shown, but the customer gets to experience a little behind-the-scenes moment from The Piona.
Supporting a Small, Mom-Owned Business
Every order placed with a small business matters.
It does not disappear into a large system. It becomes part of someone’s real story.
When you purchase from The Piona, you are supporting a mother who is building something from the ground up. You are helping me continue creating products, discovering books, improving the shop, and showing my children what it looks like to turn an idea into something real.
I am still learning. I am still experimenting. And The Piona will continue growing along with me.
But the purpose will remain the same: to create thoughtful bookish gifts that bring readers excitement, comfort, and a reason to slow down.
Your Next Reading Adventure Is Waiting
You do not always have to know which book comes next.
Sometimes the best stories are the ones you did not plan to find.
Choose your preferred genre, let the title remain a mystery, and enjoy the anticipation of opening your own Blind Date with a Book box.
Whether you are shopping for a reader you love or creating a quiet moment for yourself, I hope your package feels personal from the second it arrives.
Because every reader deserves a little surprise.
Welcome to The Piona—where your next favorite story may be waiting inside a wrapped book.
